FAQ's in Overland Park KS

An adjustment is a procedure performed by trained professionals (chiropractors) where a very specific thrust is put into a joint, most commonly the spine, to help reduce a subluxation and help improve overall function of the joint. A chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours. It is always our recommendation to ice the area following your adjustment.

The "popping" sound that you hear when a chiropractic adjustment is administered is the sound of gas within the joint rapidly dissipating during the adjustment. It should be noted that it is not a necessity to hear a "pop," and that not hearing this sound does not mean the adjustment was unsuccessful.

We take great pride in having the honor to treat you and your family. We treat each child as if they were our own and provide them with only the best care. As was previously stated, chiropractic is quite safe. It is not uncommon for chiropractors to modify their technique and tailor it to the age and size of the child. As kids are growing, it is important to insure that their nervous system is working optimally to allow them to perform and develop at their very best.

Chiropractic adjustments are also safe for pregnant women and can help reduce low back pain commonly associated with pregnancy. Regular chiropractic care can also reduce labor time and pain. Adjustments on pregnant women are modified to insure that the patient is comfortable while receiving treatment.

Our number one goal is to get you out of pain and discomfort as quickly as possible. How long it takes to achieve this goal varies, but it is dependent on your condition and overall health.

Our second goal is to KEEP you out of pain and active. This is most commonly known as reparative/preventative care stage. An adjustment may be recommended once a month to once every 6 months depending on existing conditions, activity level, and age so that you can feel and perform at your best!

X-rays are NOT required for everyone. Many factors are used to determine whether x-rays are appropriate for you such as symptoms, severity of pain, and recent/past trauma. It will be decided at the time of your exam whether x-rays are appropriate for your condition and will not be performed without your consent.

Contrary to what you may have heard on TV, chiropractic is very safe. Historically, opinion rather than fact has often dominated the discussions on this topic, even though the incidence of stroke associated with cervical manipulation is very rare and there is a lack of evidence to prove that chiropractic adjustments cause stroke. When you hear news stories about chiropractic, it is far more likely that a patient was having a stroke before an adjustment was administered. This re-enforces the importance of providing your doctor with a thorough health history prior to treatment.

Chiropractors receive a thorough education before receiving their degree and it is quite comparable to those of medical doctors. We each have our specialties, but our overall classroom instruction is about the same through our respective 4 year programs.
